Refuge du Fond des Fours (2537m), Vanoise National Park
This refuge is open annually from mid-June to mid-September
A great stop off on a long hike or a beautiful refuge if you are looking to get away from the crowds for a while. there are plenty of hiking trails in the area and lots of wildlife to enjoy.
The refuge consists of three adjoining chalets:
- refectory chalet - kitchen, bathrooms (two free unlimited water cold showers, two toilets, two sinks)
- dormitory chalet - two dorm rooms that sleep 18 and 20
- guardian's chalet - reserved for wardens, park rangers and mountain professionals
The refuge serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks - all home cooked using fresh local ingredients. Picnic lunches can be provided on request.
Bivouacking is allowed after 19:00 and the tent must be taken down before 08:00 (in July and August only). Places are limited and you'll need to book.
In winter the refuge is open but unstaffed and there is no running water.
Worth knowing
At the refuge the water is fresh, spring-sourced and tested annually. You can fill your water bottles and quench your thirst here.
As the refuge is operated on solar energy, the dorm chalet has no lights so don't forget your headtorch and your power pack for any electric devices you'll want to charge.
The refuge is an excellent place for spotting local wildlife - chamois and marmots are plentiful up here.
Dogs are prohibited (even on a leash) along with wild fires, camping, motor vehicles, picking plants, feeding the animals, leaving the marked paths, collecting crystals or stones and tipping waste.
