Val d'Isere Snow Report & Forecast

Discover the latest Val d'Isere snow conditions

By Nye Erskine, Updated

Val dโ€™Isรจre feels properly settled into winter as the year comes to a close, with cold air sitting comfortably in the valley and the surrounding peaks looking clean and well defined. The resort has a lively New Year atmosphere in the village, but on the mountain things feel calm and controlled. The season so far has built steadily rather than in big bursts, and right now conditions feel solid and dependable, particularly once you move higher into the ski area.

Snow and Weather Summary

Snow depths across Val dโ€™Isรจre are currently sitting at around 60 to 90 cm at resort level, increasing to roughly 150 to 200 cm on the upper mountain, particularly across sectors such as Pisaillas and the higher runs linking toward Tignes. There has been little fresh snowfall in recent days, so skiing is based on a well established and compact base that has been carefully maintained by grooming teams. Daytime temperatures in resort have remained below freezing, with colder overnight lows helping pistes refreeze and stay consistent, while temperatures at altitude remain firmly wintery throughout the day. Freezing levels have generally stayed low, often below 1,000 m, which is ideal for preserving snow across all elevations. Winds have mostly been light to moderate, with occasional stronger gusts on exposed ridges, but conditions have been largely stable for lift operations. On the snow, pistes are firm and grippy early in the day, softening slightly on sun exposed slopes by late morning, while north facing and higher altitude runs hold a colder, chalky feel well into the afternoon. Lower runs back toward the village remain in good shape thanks to the altitude, though busier routes can become more polished later in the day.

Outlook & Whatโ€™s On

The outlook through New Year remains cold and largely dry, with settled conditions expected and no significant snowfall signals in the immediate forecast. This should keep piste conditions consistent and predictable, especially higher up, while off piste skiing will remain limited without fresh snow unless you stick to sheltered terrain. New Yearโ€™s Eve in Val dโ€™Isรจre includes a full programme of village events, with live music, entertainment and a large fireworks display organised by the tourist office in the evening. Torchlight descents are also planned, adding to the end of year atmosphere across the resort.

Snow Takeaway

Over the next few days, the best skiing will be found higher up and on north facing pistes where snow quality stays most consistent. Use lower runs earlier in the day before they firm up, and expect reliable, well prepared on piste skiing while the cold, settled weather continues.
