What's New in Val d'Isère This Winter?

There are some interesting developments to discover across Val d'Isère this winter, with new mountain experiences, improvements to resort transport and a greater focus on environmentally responsible operations.

One of the most unusual additions is a new immersive exhibition at the top of the Vallon gondola, near the Pisaillas glacier. The experience explores the legend of Mont Iseran, a mysterious 4,000-metre mountain that appeared on maps for more than 250 years despite never actually existing. Visitors will be able to discover the story through a museum area, illustrated comic-strip corridor, audio lounge and children's corner, making it an interesting stop for skiers and pedestrians alike.

There's also a new panoramic terrace at the Vallon gondola's upper station, offering views towards the Pisaillas glacier and surrounding peaks. Picnic tables and an orientation display will help visitors identify the mountains, while a new photo point will allow skiers to capture a souvenir using their lift pass and the Val d'Isère Ski app.

Behind the scenes, Val d'Isère is introducing its first electric piste basher on the Pisaillas sector. The new machine is part of a wider effort to reduce emissions from piste preparation and explore alternatives to traditional diesel-powered equipment.

Getting around the village is also becoming more environmentally friendly, with two additional electric shuttle buses joining the resort's fleet. This brings the total to 17 fully electric vehicles for winter 2026/27, providing another convenient way to travel between accommodation, ski lifts and village facilities.

For visitors arriving from further afield, a new overnight train connection from the Netherlands and Belgium to the Tarentaise valley is also planned this winter. The service will connect cities including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Brussels with Bourg-Saint-Maurice, offering another option for reaching Val d'Isère.

Outlook & What's On

The first few weeks of December will be all about getting the ski season underway. Val d'Isère celebrated its opening weekend with Premières Traces on 28 and 29 November, featuring equipment testing and entertainment on the snow front. As December progresses, further terrain should become available across Val d'Isère and Tignes, depending on snow conditions.

One of the biggest highlights of the early season is the return of the Critérium de la Première Neige, taking place on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 December. The world's leading male alpine ski racers will compete on the famous Face de Bellevarde, with giant slalom racing on Saturday and slalom on Sunday. Both days are scheduled to begin at 10:00, with second runs starting at 13:00. There will also be music, entertainment and opportunities to meet athletes throughout the weekend.

The festive season will bring plenty of family entertainment to the village. From 21 to 27 December, Val d'Isère will host The Magic of Christmas, transforming the centre with decorations, activities and festive surprises. The programme includes an ESF Christmas show on 22 December, featuring a torchlit descent, fireworks and hot chocolate, while Father Christmas is due to arrive in the village on 24 December.

New Year's Eve will bring another celebration to the snow front, with a DJ set and fireworks at midnight to welcome 2027.

Getting Ready for the Ski Season

If you're heading to Val d'Isère in the coming weeks, now is a good time to get the final details of your trip organised. Whether it's arranging airport transfers, booking ski hire and lessons, or reserving a table at your favourite mountain restaurant, a little preparation can make those first days on the slopes much easier.

Val d'Isère's ski area stretches from La Daille and Bellevarde across to Solaise and the higher Pisaillas sector, so it's worth checking which lifts and pistes are operating before setting off each morning.

If you're planning to explore neighbouring Tignes, pay particular attention to the status of the connecting lifts and pistes during the opening weeks. The free village shuttle buses also provide useful connections between different parts of the resort.

Snow Takeaway

The new winter season is getting underway in Val d'Isère, with the slopes scheduled to have opened on 28 November and a busy December calendar ahead. The Critérium de la Première Neige will bring world-class ski racing back to the resort, while new experiences at the Vallon gondola and improvements to transport and mountain operations provide more to discover this winter.
