Emission-free transfers bring home Travel Innovation Award

Last week saw the 2017 edition of the World Travel Awards. This included the inaugural Travel Innovation Award, which went to Bourg-St-Maurice based transfer company, CoolBus, for their use of an all-electric Tesla Model X for zero-emission airport transfers.

At the start of the 2016/17 ski season, CoolBus launched their zeat.vip transfers, intended as a high-end service for which customers paid a premium. They chose, however, to run the vehicle every day in order to maximise the emission-free kilometres travelled, even when they had no premium customers booked. This meant that some lucky travellers got a free upgrade. By the end of the season, the Tesla Model X had driven over 45,000km, resulting in a 5% reduction in their carbon footprint.

The mountains that millions of people enjoy each year as a holiday destination are very environmentally sensitive regions. The effects of climate change are often more apparent in these areas than elsewhere. In providing this zero-emissions service, CoolBus are not only giving people the chance to enjoy one of the most advanced cars in the world today but highlighting the issue of climate change in the mountains.

After a successful first season running the Model X, CoolBus are adding a second one to the service, and are hoping to achieve a further 5% reduction in their CO2 emissions. As lovers of the mountains, we sincerely hope this encourages more local business to put sustainable business models at the fore of their activities.

Coolbus operate transfers to Val d'Isere, Tignes, La Plagne and Les Arcs. For tips on how to ski greener check out our guide.
