Pippa & Bob Rothenberg: Val d'Isere Homeowners

40 years on and they still love Val d'Isere over any other resort

featured in Meet the locals Author Ellie Mahoney, Val d'Isere Editor Updated

Val d'Isere is a mecca for skiing & snowboarding in the winter as well as a hot spot for all kinds of activities (including glacier skiing) in the summer. With so many things to do and so many great restaurants, great nightlife and shops on offer it's no surprise that Val d'Isere attracts regular visitors and people looking to make their stay here more permanent.

Few of us can say that we've been going to the same ski resort for 40 years, but for Bob & Pippa Rothenberg there's no place they'd rather be in the winter. They love it so much they bought an apartment here..

Tell us a little bit about why you chose Val d'Isere as your holiday home destination

3 reasons - Skiing, skiing and skiing!

How long have you been coming to Val?

Forty years

What makes Val d'Isere a special place to be for someone in your profession?

It is great for any profession! [ed: agreed!]

What are the best bits about Val d'Isere?

The variety of the runs, the restaurants and the quality of the snow.

What makes Val d'Isere special for you?

My family all enjoy coming too! [see photo]

What's your favourite piste or off-piste area to go skiing?

Piste favourite - Double M [a red piste] on Grande Motte (we don't ski off piste)

Where would you send someone who was after that something 'something special' in resort, to stay, eat or drink?

It depends, but we think that other than our flat the Blizzard Hotel is a great place to stay and Les Clochetons is a special place to eat.

Your favourite place for lunch or dinner?

Le Signal for lunch and Casa Scara for dinner

Where will we find the best coffee or hot chocolate?

Chez nous!

What has been your best ever day in Val d'Isere?

When we skied from Val d'Isere to Tignes Breviere, lunched there and then skied to the top of the Pissaillas glacier and back to our flat.

Do you remember your first trip to this resort?

Yes with a group of friends staying at the Fjord chalet, but 40 years is a long time!

What's your favourite thing to do in resort when not skiing?

Being with the family.

What do you do in the summer?

Go to Spain!

Which is your favourite shop in resort?

Spar supermarket [ed: really?!]

Where are we most likely to find you for après-ski?!

In our flat - the Folie Douce is a bit too loud, but the Pacific gets a visit for football.

Skiing or snowboarding? What's your preference & why?

Skiing because we cannot snowboard!

...

So there you have it.. top tips from Val d'Isere veterans, just make sure you drop into one of the cafes for a hot chocolate instead of trying to find their place ;-)
