Discover the latest Val d'Isere snow conditions
Val d’Isère is settling into winter now. The upper slopes have taken on a proper layer of snow and the cold air has given the valley a sharper feel in the mornings. From the village you can see the higher ridgelines holding their snow well and there is a sense that the season is beginning to take shape. Locals and early visitors are already talking about how the last few days have helped the mountains look more like mid December than early December.
The latest resort figures show 53 centimetres of snow at the village base at 1,850 metres and 93 centimetres at altitude near 3,000 metres. Snowfall earlier in the week added 11 centimetres at resort level and 22 centimetres up high. The forecast for the next few days suggests around 5 to 6 centimetres of new snow is possible, especially at mid and upper elevations. Overnight temperatures are expected to fall to around minus 6 degrees with daytime temperatures remaining close to freezing, which helps maintain good surface quality. Higher slopes are holding soft but cold snow, and piste preparation is giving good firmness in the mornings. Lower level slopes still show thinner cover and will need more snowfall or sustained cold to become more reliable.
Weather models are showing a mostly settled pattern for the week ahead, with the chance of light snowfall coming through at times on upper slopes. This should help maintain the snowpack and could give a gentle refresh to the pistes. Around the resort preparations are underway for the festive period, with seasonal activities being announced by the tourist office and more areas of the mountain opening in stages. As more lifts come online the skiing options should widen, particularly on the higher terrain where the base is strongest. The cold outlook is good news for snow preservation and could help conditions improve steadily.
One of the biggest events of the season with the world's best men's and women's slalom racers competing on the Face de Bellevarde and OK (Oreiller Killy) slopes in Val d'Isère, in the Le Criterium.
This major Val d'Isère event brings together the world's best men's and women's skiers for two action-packed weekends of racing on the Face de Bellevarde and Oreiller-Killy slopes, creating a vibrant carnival atmosphere throughout the resort. Alongside the downhill and giant slalom races, visitors can enjoy brand exhibitions, ski testing and local Savoyard food, while the evenings transform the town into a lively street festival with live rock concerts, DJs and traffic-free celebrations in the resort centre. This weekend 13th and 14th December it's the Mens Giant Slalom and Mens Slalom.
Val d’Isère is showing a solid early season base at altitude with enough recent snow to make the higher slopes well worth skiing. Lower areas still need more snowfall but the general picture is positive. Anyone heading up in the next few days should aim for upper lifts and prepared pistes where the coverage and quality are most reliable.
