Winter has settled beautifully into Val d'Isère. The resort feels alive again, the peaks are white from top to bottom and early season conditions are shaping up to be some of the best we have seen in years. With the ski area preparing to open fully this weekend, excitement is rising throughout the resort. It is one of those classic Val d'Isère starts where cold weather, steady snowfall and a strong early base all arrive at once.
Val d'Isère is now fully open for the winter season.
Snow and Weather Summary
The early season has already delivered some very promising snowfall. The upper slopes have built a healthy base for the beginning of December and the cold temperatures are helping preserve it. Forecasts over the next few days continue to look positive, with fresh snow expected in the run up to the weekend.
This week began very cold and although temperatures lifted slightly midweek, they are expected to fall back again by Friday evening. Overnight values at altitude may reach around minus ten, while the resort will sit several degrees below freezing. Daytime temperatures are forecast to stay mostly below zero which is ideal for maintaining snow quality on the pistes.
The freezing level has been fluctuating around 1300 to 1700 metres but is forecast to drop lower through the weekend. Light north westerly winds may pick up on Saturday before easing gradually into Sunday.
Although snow coverage on the pistes is looking strong for early December, off piste terrain will still have thin spots at this stage of the season. Snowpack consolidation has only just begun, so extra care is needed away from marked runs.
