Val d'Isere Snow Report: 9th December 2013

Beautiful sunshine & crisp pistes

The Alps have been drenched in sunshine and cool temperatures for the past week or so, and this weekend was no exception. Setting off to Val d'Isere with no fresh snow on the horizon we were interested to see what the pistes would be like.

Heading up the Solaise express the mountains were cool, crisp and covered in sunshine. Looking out over the slopes from the top of the chair it was easy to see there was still plenty of snow cover and the pistes defintiely did not disappoint throughout the day. As it is so quiet at this time of year the slopes were still freshly groomed at midday, and with no queues and only a few other people up the mountain the conditions were great.

The cold temperatures do mean the slopes are extremely crisp first thing in the morning so watch out for those sneaky icy patches but as the sun beats down on them the snow softens and the pistes make for a great day of cruising. With no new snow on the horizon we are lucky to have the cold temperatures maintaining the base layer here in Val d'Isere and Tignes. The lack of fresh snow does mean the off-piste is not worth it at the moment, with crisp icy snow on top and a thin layer of powder underneath it is better to stick to the freshly groomed marked pistes.

The weather forecast is promising more sunshine and no fresh snow so we better start doing our snow dance!
