Val d'Isere Apres Ski Report: 19th December 2012

Living the seasonnaire life to the max!

We would like to say that we behave, we really would. But as our parents have always instructed us to tell the truth, we’ll just say that it’s definitely work in progress..... It will come as no surprise then that this week was just another epic series of jagerbombs, awesome DJs, and all out shenanigans. This is Val d’Isere; we just can’t help it!

Our apres excitement began on Thursday night with multiple special occasions and seasonnaire party opportunities brought on by Bar Alexandra, Le Petit Danois and Doudoune Nightclub. After a long day of riding, we headed into Alexandra Bar for their infamously huge burgers and a beer. A couple of pints later, we found ourselves playing pool while being serenaded by the very talented Michel who not only absolutely owns any song thrown at him but can also use his mount to play the trumpet without, um, a trumpet. (I know it sounds strange but it is so cool to witness! You’ll have to come see it for yourself!) Fortunately for all of us in Val, this is just one of the many artists coming through Bar Alexandra, the seasonnaire spot for delicious cocktails and the most pool tables in Val.

Our night naturally evolved when the first beer became the first rum and Coke and we were ready to go. Where to next? The Petit Danois, of course! This next bar was rowdy as usual with the beats being dropped by DJ newcomer Annalie, one of Danois’ amazing bartenders. With the number of people getting crazy on the dance floor, we knew our ears and flailing bodies were in fantastic hands. While some people were having just a little too much fun on the pole, others had no problem demonstrating their binge drinking skills after knocking back jagerbomb after jagerbomb. I guess someone has to do it!

Our night continued well into the morning thanks to This Is It Events Management, the Val based organizing duo in charge of bringing some of the biggest DJs to l’Espace Killy. This year, they have partnered up with Doudoune nightclub to help seasonnaires and tourists alike get their partying on. It is thanks to them that the UK’s DJ Yoda absolutely threw down for all in Val on Thursday making it almost impossible for some of us to get on the slopes the next day. Yet again, the complementary Doudoune shuttle saves the shred day by taking me all the way to La Daille in -19 degree weather!

After such an intense night, we couldn’t help but try to have a mellower weekend, especially with so much snow being predicted for the week. Of course, high winds and change in weather simply meant that all the time we would have spent on the hill diminished substantially and was instead spent inside. This time inside (some of our favorite bars) was greatly made up for these last couple of days with our excursions to the one and only: La Folie Douce! For the beginning of the season, we weren’t exactly expecting the huge number of people getting together at their favorite on-piste party. We should have known better! Founded in 1969, La Folie Douce is an internationally renowned mountain party/concert/mayhem clubbing experience. Now bringing dancers, musicians, flame throwers and the like to add to its known singers such as Kelly White, La Folie Douce is the one spot stop for an insane end to your afternoon. With the ability to host up to 2000 people daily, we took it upon ourselves to dance on tables with the hundreds of other people present. Who wouldn’t?

With Christmas now under a week away, the partying is going to be cranking it up another notch here in Val d'Isere. I'm off to the States for a bit of a break but will be back in the New Year to continue reporting on all that is apres in resort.

Have a great Christmas!
