Val d'Isere Apres Ski Report: 3rd February 2012

Comfort food & live music

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Katherine Harle, Updated

Last Tuesday was my day off and I have to admit I didn’t make it up the mountain due to a terrible hangover, no sympathy please, it was all my own doing!

So I decided what I really needed to make myself feel better was a Moris burger. So me and my friend headed along to The Moris Bar to see what all the fuss was about.

The Moris is located on the left about 100 metres past the second roundabout in the direction of the Fornet. You can’t miss it, it’s a massive white building with the bar located on the ground floor underneath the hotel.

The bar this year is being run by Dom, who is the brother of former manager Abi, so the bar’s in safe hands and, with a few changes here and there, there are some exciting things going on.

The hotel itself was built in 1938 making it one of the oldest hotels in Val d’Isere. The bar was founded in 1988 and next year will see the Moris’s 25th anniversary so there will be lots of fun and games to celebrate.

Getting back to the present though and the Moris burger kitchen is open from 4pm until 9pm every day apart from Wednesday when it’s open until 10pm.

There’s a good selection of burgers including the classics, a veggie option, chicken burgers as well as their homemade beef patties which come in a number of guises. I went for the spicy Mexican with lots of jalapenos and it was delicious. They’re absolutely massive and I struggled to finish the plate which, as well as the massive burger, was laden with fries.

There’s also a black pepper burger with a spicy pepper sauce, a blue cheese burger and, if you dare, there’s even a double burger which includes 400 grams of beef as well as cheese, bacon, egg, hash brown and onion rings. All that, as well as the fries, make a pretty hefty meal! Dom told me that the record for eating one is 8 minutes and 13 seconds which, if you can beat, is frankly ridiculous!!!

There are also lighter bites including salads, nachos and wings if you just wanted to grab a snack or something to share.

The burger kitchen isn’t the only attraction in the Moris though. It’s the only bar in town where you can catch live music everyday of the week. With bands including the infamous Mullit, new lads Muntfinger who, with their glamrock style, are causing quite a stir. If you’re into boys wearing make-up and spandex, come check them out. There are also old timers Fourplay, Mike and Richie, The Dominoes, who play everything from Queen to James Brown, The Tricks and some special acts coming up so there’s bound to be something to suit your tastes.

There’s also a wide range of drinks with Desperadoes and Strongbow on tap as well as bottled beers and the usual spirits. There are also happy hour flavoured shots at 10 for €15 and 1080s which are a kind of wine spritzer cocktail at only €5 a pint. If you’re game there’s also the chilli challenge with super hot n spicy vodka including a special strawberry flavoured one. If you’re really brave try the Domski Death Vodka which I’ve heard is so hot you’ll be rolling round in the snow afterwards.

Back to the line-up for the live music:

  • Thursday means après with Mike and Westy then Muntfinger from 11pm
  • Friday brings après with Mike and Richie followed by Mullit from 11pm
  • Sunday apres with Mike and then Sunday evening with Fourplay
  • Monday apres with The Doms which leads onto Monday evening with the whole ensemble of The Dominos
  • Tuesday après is with Mike & Richie followed by the infamous Mullit
  • Finally Wednesday apres is with Ben & Al then in the evening there is The Tricks

Some special future events to look out for are on Thursday the 9th of February when Duke, the beatbox trio, are returning to the Moris. There’s a school disco on Valentine’s night with lots of fun, games and fancy dress and on the 29th of February there’s a special Leap year Frat party where everyone who has a birthday outside of the season is offered a free drink (bring ID) and the marvellous Dr Bruce are playing.

That’s it from me so stay safe, have fun and TTFN.
