Rescue teams are calling for people out ski touring or hiking in the mountains to be vigilant, after an avalanche killed three people yesterday morning near Bonneval sur Arc.

The small group were hiking up towards the Col du Greffier in the Haute-Maurienne, not far from the Italian border when the avalanche struck.

They were all wearing crampons and were all kitted out with avalanche safety equipment, with skis on their backpacks ready to make a descent in the couloir, when an avalanche swept across them.

Five members of the CRS rescue team, a doctor and a dog handler were called to the site, but sadly could only note the death of the three people.

Our thoughts are with their family and friends.
