Blizzard conditions take out British medal hopes

X-Games Europe started yesterday and although it produced some excitement it was a disappointing day for British skier James Woods.

Woodsy was one of Britian's best chances of a medal having taken bronze in the X-Games in Aspen earlier this year.

The slopesyle course was in good condition and as the event started the skiers were making the most of patchy skies. Woodsy fell on his first run and needed his second run to go smoothly to make the finals. But as the competition progressed the weather worsened and soon the course was running slow with fresh snow on the ground and the visibility had dropped as the clouds closed in.

Unable to ride to his full Woodsy fell victim to the elements as was eliminated.

The weather also took out the other top seeds Henrik Harlaut, and Nick Goepper. Harlaut had been on amazing form in Aspen with nose butter triple cork 1620 in the big air and great runs in the slopestyle but the blizzard like conditions made skiing almost impossible for the dreadlocked Swede. Also struggling with the conditions was Nick Goepper who's first round run saw him lose a ski on take off and still stomp a double cork like it was nothing more than a snow plough on the nursery slope.

The slopestyle course was eventually closed due to the weather and the men's ski slopestyle will take place this afternoon.

The conditions this morning in Tignes were a million miles from yesterday's white out with clear skies and sun shine. Woodsy won't be in the final but skiers Jossi Wells, Rus Henshaw, Gus Kenworthy and Tom Wallisch took the top spots in qualifying so there is plenty of talent on show for the crowds here in Tignes.

Last night was the Women's snowboard halfpipe final and it was a “three-pete” for American Kelly Clark who took gold ahead of Elena Hight and Arielle Gold, in less than perfect conditions. The ladies put on an amazing show in a snowy, very windy pipe and it was clear to anyone watching that Women's snowboard halfpipe has come a long way in the last few years and when the girls drop-in in Sochi next year we can expect to see some amazing skiing.

So the first day of X-Games was slowed by the weather and it was a disappointing day for the British fans, who hoped to cheer a home grown talent onto the podium, but as ever the talent on display at X-Games and the excitement of the event make these grumbles only minor complaints.

The sun is out now and we have plenty to look forward to with both the Men's and Women's Ski slopestyle finals coming up as well as the Snowboard Super-pipe final tonight. The Games aren't over yet.
