The Game of GNAR

featured in Nightlife Reviews Author Justine Mulliez, Val d'Isere Reporter Updated

Most weeks, we don’t think Mum would mind too much what we do. We’re adults, we’re financially dependent, and, you know, we can legally drink. But last week, last week was a whole different story. Unfortunately, the game of GNAR came back to Val with a vengeance. If you are unfamiliar with this concept, you can stumble upon a video posted by some of our competitors on youtube… But first, let me explain.

The game of GNAR (Gaffney’s Numerical Assessment of Radness) was created by Robb Gaffney and the late Shane McConkey, two Squaw Valley locals known for their impossible freeskiing prowess. The game of GNAR is based on earning the most points for the craziest lines, the least penalties, and the most insane theatrics, nude or not. With that said, it is only appropriate that Val d’Isère would host its own game of GNAR for another year. Split up into teams of four maximum, each team had to accomplish over 50 different challenges in just two days. These challenges could range from becoming BFFs with the local lifties to eating breakfast in the lift lines to licking a stranger’s onesie.

With sign-ups taking place in the Saloon bar and Fall Line, the British seasonnaire showing was sure to come in strong. As usual, they weren’t ones to disappoint! Showing up in a variety of costumes, the 40 teams were off, leaving all non-participants and other participating teams in the dust.

Here’s the game of GNAR Val d’Isère style recap in a nutshell: drinking, clothes, onesies, ski gear, snowboards, jagerbombs, gopros, cameras, photos, smiling, flirting, burping, shots, shots, shots, more shots, less clothes, statues, scarring children for life, haunting parents, grannies afraid, town take over, new friends, old friends, no friends, no clothes, drunkenness, more drunkenness, the drunkest, winning the golden gnome.

From here on in, the pictures will do the talking…
