If you've ever stayed in a hotel or tourist residence you may have noticed an additional charge on your bill, called the Tourist Tax or Tax de Séjour, which is applicable year round to anyone who isn't a resident of the local area.

Under 18's and anyone staying on a seasonnaire working contract are exempt for paying the tax, but to anyone staying in a hotel or 'residence de tourisme' (apartment complexes let out by the tourist office), cmapsite or even mountain huts are eligible to pay.

From 1st November 2015 the rates per person per night will be as follows:

  • 5 star hotels, 5 star tourist residences - 3.30€
  • 4 star hotels, 4 star tourist residences - 2.48€
  • 3 star hotels, 3 star tourist residences - 1.65€
  • 2 star hotels, 2 star tourist residences - 1.00€
  • 1 star hotels, 1 star tourist residences - 0.83€
  • Unclassified hotels or tourist residences - 0.44€
  • Gites - 0.83€
  • Mountain Refuges - 0.22€
  • Campsites - 0.22€

Most chalet and apartment companies will absorb this into their pricing, but if you're booking independently this it's something you might need to know.
