Diversions in place but traffic is pretty bad

After another rockfall last night on the road between Bourg St Maurice & Moutiers, a diversion has been put in place, but traffic today is pretty horrendous.

Big delays can be expected until the area affected by the landslide is cleared, not only on the roads but also with the train network in the area.

Trains have been stopped between Albertville & Bourg St Maurice, although replacement buses have been put in place.

40 people working or living nearby had been evacuated, and a team of geologists flown over the landslide to look for signs of further collapse.

Normal road and rail services are expected to return on Friday.

* Update 9th April *

It appears that the roads are back to normal service this morning, but the rail lines are still being cleared. Around 400 cubic metres of rock is believed to have tumbled down the mountain side, smashing into roads, buildings, rail lines and overhead cables. Substitute buses will remain in operation until the railway tracks have been repaired.
