Val d'Isere Video Report: 16th December 2013

A sugary layer that might cause trouble later

Henry from Alpine Experience and Henry's Avalanche Talks sent us this video from his ski tour on Deceber 16th.

The cold temperatures and shallow snow pack has caused the snow in the off piste to turn sugary and granulated. These snow crystals are great fun to ski now but the new snow that comes down this weekend is going to set up on this weak layer. This is a recipe for strong layers of snow sitting on weak layers of snow and the possibility of avalanches occuring in the back country.

If you are coming out over Christmas and want to enjoy the new snow, that should arrive on Thursday, we would recommend taking an Off Piste Guide.
