Tignes and Val d'Isere Cut Off By Avalanche
Road Closed For Several Hours
Access to both Tignes and Val d'Isere was blocked yesterday evening following an avalanche in the area. Whilst there were no casualties involved, the slide came right across the main road, preventing access to both resorts for several hours.
The 7m high, 40m wide avalanche occurred at the entrance to the Brevieres tunnel in exactly the same spot where a landslide came down in March 2012 also blocking traffic in the area. Yesterday's slide occurred at about 19:30 and the road was not re-opened until 23:00.
Recent signifcant temperature increases combined with the huge amount of snowfall that we have experienced throughout the winter season have made conditions particularly conducive to the occurrence of avalanches across the Alps. Authoritites are warning of the high avalanche risk and urging anyone heading into the mountains so be extremely prudent.
