Val d'Isere Snow Report: 3rd January 2015
Fantastic Conditions over New Year!
It’s been a great week of skiing here in Val d’Isere over new year after last weeks snowfall with more lift accessed terrain becoming skiable throughout the week. I have skied four times this week and each day have experienced sunny conditions with generally good snow cover throughout the whole resort from Le Fornet down to Tignes Le Brevieres.
For the first time in about two weeks the Grand Motte has been open for skiing (it has been closed for the past two weeks due to strong, gusty winds and technical issues). This means several more pistes are now open with excellent snow cover!
Because of the incredibly cold temperatures at the beginning of the week a lot of the pistes have been bullet proof in the morning and quite icy even at low altitudes. However as the sun hits the slopes by mid morning they generally soften up for some great on piste skiing. Because we have only had around 70cm of snow so far this season the pistes can get pretty bony by the end of the day.
There are plenty of areas with high volumes of traffic such as the top of Tommeuses and Le Face that are quite bare by 1600. That being said however, I skied Le Face this afternoon and was pleasantly surprised how good the conditions were! Hopefully with the New Year crowd dispersing this weekend the pistes should hold up a lot better with fewer skiers hitting them on a daily basis.
For those skiers arriving over the weekend you can look forward to great conditions throughout the resort, shorter lift queues and plenty of skiing to get your teeth into!
