No snow in the Alps? If you’re in Val d’Isere think again!

Papers and new bulletins across the UK are currently shouting doom and gloom about the state of the European snow and ski conditions. In Val d’Isere they couldn’t be more wrong!

With Christmas week now well and truly upon us, the on piste conditions are awesome considering the relatively low snowfall for this time of year. A huge proportion of ski runs in Val d’Isere are now in fact open including those down to La Daille, Val dI’sere and Le Fornet. STVI have done a truly remarkable job of preparing Le Face for Christmas week!

The world cup run ‘OK’ down from the top of Bellevarde into La Daille is in great shape after last weekends competition and is running fast for those up for a challenge! The best conditions and snow cover are still to be found up high on the Glacier du Pissales and the Grande Motte.

This afternoon I skied in both Val d’Isere and Tignes and was surprised at the quality of the on piste skiing! We got our timing pretty much spot on and were rewarded with near empty runs from the top of the Bellevarde.

With our last snowfall on the 18th of December, off piste options are still quite limited. In order to access good snow be prepared for a hike or tour for the best conditions. Those who are prepared for a tour could still be rewarded with some great snow! For the best conditions hiring a mountain guide for the day is highly recommended.

With Meteo France predicting significant snowfalls and a drastic reduction in temperature between Saturday and next Monday the conditions are only going to improve. Hopefully the additional snow will open up some more off piste and backcountry options.
