Val d'Isere Snow Report: 21st December 2015

The start of the Christmas holidays in Val d'Isere

featured in Snow report Author Wayne Watson, Val d'Isere Reporter Updated

We’ve had a fantastic week with beautiful sunny weather. The pistes have been superb and it’s been fairly quiet, but the holidays are now under way and suddenly there seems to be people everywhere.

With the increase of skier/snowboarder traffic on the pistes the snow is breaking down quit rapidly and stones are showing up already. Some pistes that were perfect yesterday (Saturday) are now much firmer with stones mixed in. Still, if you pay attention and stick to the sides of the pistes the nasty bits can still be avoided.

I would still recommend staying off any closed pistes as they are closed for a reason and some are either incredibly icy or just short of snow and very rocky.

We are still soldiering on off-piste and finding some very good skiing, but some sort of walk is involved on a daily basis. With the lack of snow we are seeing very few other groups off-piste and it’s been a bonus and privilege having the mountain to ourselves.

We were expecting a chance of 5 to 10 centimetres of snow today (Monday 21st) but it may just miss us. It’s trying but every time it seems like it might start to snow it brightens up. Fingers crossed we do get some much needed snow before tomorrow, when the sun is forecast to shine again.

Weather in the village:

  • Tuesday – sunny -3C/+7C wind from the S at 5km/h
  • Wednesday – sunny -2C/+3 wind from the S at 5km/h
  • Thursday - partially sunny -4C/+3C wind from the SW at 5 km/h
  • Friday - partially sunny -4C/+5C wind from the SW at 5km/h

The avalanche risk is as low as it gets at the moment with a 1/5 rating. The base is rotten with absolutely no cohesion so when it does snow it will be extremely dangerous. (I don’t think we’ll need to worry about that for a while!)
