Val d'Isere Snow Report: 18th December 2015

A little pre-Christmas snow report before the weekend kicks off

featured in Snow report Author Wayne Watson, Val d'Isere Reporter Updated

We had five centimetres of fresh snow on Tuesday night and it made a huge difference both on-and-off piste. Five centimetres doesn’t sound like much (because it isn’t) but when you’re desperate and no snow is in the forecast the 5cm’s was gratefully received.

It softened up many of the pistes, which were becoming pretty slick in places and even made a closed piste that I’ve been using after off-piste itineraries very pleasant instead of a bit of a battle.

The off-piste is still pretty limited and we’re ‘skinning’ most days to access what is available. We’ve had some great skiing but extreme caution is needed when choosing where to ski, and keep your speed down as there are rocks lurking just under the surface.

More lifts and pistes should open tomorrow (Saturday 19th) and there is at least one piste now open down to Les Boisses and Les Brevieres. Both are popular lunching venues for piste skiers who like to have a bit of a mission for their morning ski. Do avoid any closed pistes in that sector as they still haven’t sorted out the problem with the icy patches.

Don’t forget the Ladies World Cup prize giving in the centre of town tonight (Friday) at 6PM. There is animation, music, Bald Eagles flying in-and-out carrying the medals, and the top-six usually do a little dance.

Weather in the village:

Saturday – Sunny -2C/+7C - wind from the NE at 5km/h

Sunday – Sunny -2C/+8C -wind from the SE at 5km/h

Monday- Partially sunny -3C/+4C -wind from the NW at 5km/h

Tuesday- Partially sunny -4C/+5C -wind from the SE at 5km/h

Unfortunately no snow is forecast during the next ten days, but fortunately we do have perhaps the world’s best snow making system and the resort will be fully open to welcome the Christmas holiday skiers.
