Great snow cover as we head into April

Piste skiing continues to be pretty good too

featured in Snow report Author Wayne Watson, Val d'Isere Reporter Updated

It was another tricky week snow and weather-wise but again the weather was kind to us and we managed some fantastic skiing. Most of the powder had dried up by Monday so we skied steep slopes in Tignes.

The Face Nord du Grande Balme and the Sachette Couloir were smooth and chalky and made for excellent skiing. On Tuesday we had some unexpected fresh snow with decent visibility and we profited with a ‘maximum-turn’ extravaganza.

We skied great snow non-stop all morning long and it was a brilliant day. We returned to the Fornet on Wednesday and skied lovely powder in the Pays Desert and Lechoir and I skied off-piste with my children in the afternoon. Thursday however was shaping up to be a real ‘stinker’, probably the trickiest day of the season but we ‘sniffed’ out so good skiing off the Grande Motte, which is as high as we could possibly go. It was a great result as expectations we rock-bottom and we ended up skiing powder with good light and a fantastic ambience.

The piste skiing continues to be pretty good as the pistes are immaculately groomed each night. As usual they are best in the morning but in the afternoon the snow has become wet and sticky with the heat.

It looks as if the off-and-on weather will continue over the weekend.

  • Friday-Cloudy +2C/+8C Wind from the SE at 5 gusting to 50km/h
  • Saturday-Cloudy 0/+11C Wind from the E at 5 gusting to 50km/h
  • Sunday-light rain 0/+10C Wind from the SE at 5 gusting to 45km/h
  • Monday-Cloudy 0/+9C Wind from the SE at 5 gusting to 45km/h

With the wind coming from an easterly direction we’ll have the chance of some snow towards the Fornet, which is always good news! Don’t despair over the forecast it is usually much better than predicted and you never know for sure until you get up on the mountain.

Stay tuned for another update on Monday!
