Val d'Isere Snow Report: 10 January 2014

For the best snow stick to the pistes until after the weekend

There's some good skiing to be had today in Val d'Isere and Tignes but it will be on piste.

We spoke to off-piste guide from Alpine Experience and HAT Henry Schniewind who said “It's been so warm lately that the snow has started to change. There's been a huge difference from last Sunday when we had all that powder. The snow has changed and to find good snow in the off piste you would have to head above 2500m and onto North facing slopes and with the weak layer that we have at the moment and the limited visibility we had this morning that's too risky. I have been skiing on North facing slopes this week but in better light and sticking to slopes below thirty degrees and there has been some good snow.”

So it looks like off-piste options are limited in Val and Tignes today but the pistes will be in good condition, a little firm this morning but softening in the afternoon. The light is a little bit flat at the moment too in Val and Tignes but there are breaks in the clouds

There is new snow on the way and we are are expecting a drop in temperatures and about 15-20cm of fresh snow after the weekend which should take Val d'Isere and Tignes out of these spring like conditions and back into winter.
