Wintry weather in Val d'Isere this week

Spring might be just around the corner but it won’t feel at all springlike this week as the aptly named “Beast from the East” weather front arrives on Monday. A huge area of high pressure is in control of the weather for the whole of Northern Europe at the moment which has brought about this period of mainly very settled weather.

The centre of the high pressure currently sits over Northern Sweden and, as it makes its way towards the Atlantic, it is drawing in another area of high pressure from Siberia. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday look like being extremely cold as this Siberian weather front is well and truly in charge. As the worst of the cold passes by on Wednesday, we should get some snow on Wednesday into Thursday, when anything up to 25cm may fall. Monday and Tuesday will see daytime “highs” of around -12ºC, feeling like -18ºC with the windchill factor added in.

The North Atlantic Jetstream currently sits over Scandinavia and is sweeping down over Central Europe towards the Iberian Peninsula before tracking easterly across the Southern Mediterranean. The “void” behind it to the north-east is allowing this Siberian weather to move in.

A mainly bright day with sunshine in the morning and sunny intervals in the afternoon. Winds will be light, at around 10kmph, and northerly in their direction. A bitterly cold dry day with daytime highs of -5ºC to -12ºC in resort in the afternoon, feeling colder in the northerly breeze.

A mainly cloudy day but, hopefully, with some sunny intervals. It will remain very cold with the possibility of light snow showers although only around 2cm is likely. Another cold day with light northerly winds at around 5kmph.

After a sunny start, clouds will build around lunchtime. Another cold day with rising temperatures as the day goes on. Morning temperatures of -10ºC will rise to around -5ºC in the afternoon as the cold Siberian front moves through. Winds will have veered to the south, which will help make things feel a bit warmer than on Monday and Tuesday. Snow likely late in the day, at around 18:00, and probably continuing into Thursday morning, with around 10cm.

Another cloudy and potentially snowy day, with light snow possible all day with a further 10cm. Warmer than earlier in the week with daytime highs of 0ºC in the afternoon in resort. Winds will increase slightly to around 15kmph and have backed up to westerly in direction.

Potentially snowy day with heavy cloud cover; anything up of 15cm of snow might fall. Winds will remain light at around 10kmph and will be variable in direction. Temperatures will rise from around -3ºC in the morning to 0ºC by mid-afternoon.

Winds will remain light and variable and there is a potential for a further 10cm of snow. A mainly cloudy day with lunchtime temperatures of around 0ºC. It looks like being cloudy all day.

A warmer day with daytime resort highs of around +3ºC likely. Cloudy in the main with hopefully a few sunny intervals. Winds will remain light, at around 8kmph from the north.
