Pick the perfect chalet in Val d'Isere this winter 2018/19

There's no better place to stay during a ski holiday than in an authentic Alpine chalet. Nothing beats the feeling of entering a cosy, wooden-panelled living room after a day out in the mountains, and sitting down on a plush sofa with a glass of mulled wine in front of a roaring fire or, even better, getting into a hot tub with a glass of champagne.

However, there are plenty of options to factor in when choosing the perfect ski chalet in Val d'Isere. From its location to whether to go for catered or self-catered, its size and even its style. This short guide will help you narrow down your search.

Luxury chalet

If you’re looking for luxury chalets, the area of Le Cret is a good place to start. Just on the outskirts of town, there are many luxury chalets here offering spacious ensuite rooms, jacuzzis, saunas and all the added extras. Many of these chalets are housed in beautifully restored farmhouses and boast stunning views across the Espace Killy. At the base of La Face slopes in the centre of Val d'Isère and just below the tree line to the west, is the exclusive chalet cluster of Le Carats. An increasingly popular area, particularly with celebrities, Le Carats has great ski-in/ski-out accommodation with the added benefit of being really close to all the town’s bars and restaurants.

Budget chalet

As you approach Val d'Isère by road, the first village you come to is La Daille. This is a great place to book accommodation if you are looking for value for money, as it is only a five minute bus ride into Val d'Isère town. There are some quaint village chalets on the edge of the runs in La Daille, and the ski lifts are just seconds away.

Corporate chalets

If you’re travelling with a group you may want to be in the centre of town, and the best of Val d’Isère’s nightlife. Whilst there are very few chalets actually located in the small centre of Val d'Isère, on the snowline - or the front de neige - there are a few centrally located chalets in fantastic positions. Right at the bottom of the Bellevarde home run and just behind the main high street, this is a great place to be if you want to make the most of the amazing ski area and the equally amazing après-ski.

Ski-in/ski-out chalets

There are many chalets in Val d’Isère that can claim to be ski to the door, but if you’re looking for real ski-in/ski-out chalet accommodation, it may be worth looking at Le Legettaz. Located about five minutes walk from the centre of Val d'Isère, Le Legettaz offers modern chalet accommodation right on the edge of the slopes. There are a range of mid and high end chalets here that are ideally positioned to make the most of the Espace Killy ski area.

Family-friendly chalets

Proximity to the pistes and ski schools will undoubtedly be a priority if you are coming to Val d’Isère for a family ski holiday. The centre of Val d’Isère is as good a place as any for a family to base themselves. With easy access to the ski area for adults and kids alike, this is also a great place to be for other child friendly facilities such as the swimming pool and ice rink. Whether you opt for a chalet in the centre of town or in one of Val d’Isère’s quieter out-of-town locations, it is worth checking with your chalet owner or operator whether they offer childcare, child specific menus, and any relevant baby equipment.

Eco chalets

Many of Val d’Isère’s chalets have been renovated and built with current eco-trends in mind, so if keeping your environmental impact to a minimum is a priority, then you must ask the right questions when choosing chalet accommodation. Food purchasing and recycling policies, types of cleaning products used, heating systems, build techniques, and type of construction materials are all worth enquiring about if you are an eco-conscious skier.

Seasonal chalets

With a legendary nightlife and a world class ski area, Val d’Isère is a great destination for anyone looking to spend a winter season in the Alps. When it comes to seasonal accommodation there is no shortage of choice, but if you fancy staying somewhere that is slightly cheaper, yet still close to all the action, then La Daille might be a good option.
