France's oldest cable car station is being converted into a luxury hotel between the Solaise Express chair-lift and the Solaise cable-car, making it the highest hotel in France.

Formerly the Tête de Solaise mountain restaurant, the new Le Refuge de Solaise hotel will have a traditional, 14-bed refuge dormitory, 34 bedrooms, and three luxury apartments. A 300-seat gourmet restaurant and cocktail bar will serve guests and the skiing public alike, along with a seminar and projection room, 23-meter pool and spa, and a children's play area.

The hotel will only be accessible via the ski slopes and the new Solaise gondola in winter, while in summer it can be accessed on foot, or by car via the col de l’Iseran, which is the highest paved road in Europe. The brainchild of local architect Jean-Charles Covarel, in partnership with restaurateur Jean-Claude Borel, the hotel is on schedule to open to guests in December 2018.
