Big freeze causes flooding in Val d'Isere

The water mains in Val d'Isere burst under freezing conditions yesterday temporarily flooding parts of the high street and damaging a luxury 4* hotel.

A temperature of -26°C caused ground movements which burst main water pipe

The freeze thaw effect on the surrounding ground was sufficient to burst the thick pipe and spill water out at a gushing rate.
Water quickly flowed down the rue de la Poste and then down the high street where flooding occurred of up to 20cm.

The incident happened just next to the 4* hotel the L'Aigle des Neiges which unfortunately suffered flooding in the basement spa and has since had to close access to the spa and inside swimming pool.

Local services were working to clear frozen over drains in an attempt to reduce flooding whilst Veolia (water services) worked on shutting off water supply to affected area before replacing the pipe.

Local French television were on scene with their cameras:
